AUSTRALIA – Ban of Animal Testing
Since 1st July 2020, the prohibition of using new data obtained through animal tests is implemented only for cosmetic purposes.
With the implementation of the Industrial Chemical Introduction Scheme (AICIS), the ban on animal testing also comes into force.
According to the Industrial Chemicals Acts of 2019, the safety of any new cosmetic ingredient manufactured or imported into Australia cannot be demonstrated with data obtained through animal testing. This law doesn’t affect cosmetic products that are already on the market nor ingredients with multiple functions in different product categories.
The ban on using animal test data for ingredients used exclusively in cosmetics applies in all circumstances, with three limited exceptions. These exceptions are consistent with European Union regulations and are necessary to protect the human health and the environment. These exceptions are, for example, in vitro methods validated by the OECD, in silico methods and extrapolation methods.
