AUSTRALIA – Implementation of the Australian Industrial Chemical Introducton Scheme (AICIS)
Since July 1st, 2020, the National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS) has been superseded by the Industrial Chemical Introduction Scheme (AICIS).
In Australia, cosmetic products are classified as industrial chemicals, which were subject to NICNAS compliance.
In accordance with the provisions of the Industrial Chemicals Act of 2019, the NICNAS is superseded by the AICIS, as the new national regulation for the import and manufacture of industrial chemicals in Australia.
The main changes introduced by this new regulation include:
- The replacement of the NICNAS registration portal by the AICIS’ one.
- The replacement of the Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals by the AICIS Inventory.
- Modification of registration costs (8 different levels)
- Categories of industrial chemical products are established according to the level of risk to human health and the environment. It also establishes the requirements that must be met for each category.
